Here are a few travel tips to make sure that your trip to England goes smoothly:

  • All individuals who enter England from the United States must have a valid passport.
  • If you are planning on staying in England for longer than 90 days, you will need to obtain a visa. Visas should be obtained prior to departure and can be obtained from the United States Embassy. Allow ample time for the processing of a visa, it can take up to several months.
  • The following days are observed as national holidays and most public places such as banks and stores will be closed: New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Early May Bank Holiday, Spring Bank Holiday, Summer Bank Holiday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
  • Many English airlines have very strict baggage rules. For most airlines, passengers are allowed one checked bag weighing 44lbs and two carry-ons weighing a combined 22 lbs per person.
    When you return to the United States after being in England you may have to go through Customs. There are certain regulations on how much souvenirs a person is allowed to bring back into the country. Make sure and check the regulations before you leave.
  • The standard electrical voltage in England is 240 v AC, 50HZ. If you are brining appliances from the United States, you will need a voltage adapter and converter.
  • Even though England is a safe and stable country, you always want to be prepared. Don’t carry large amount of cash or credit cards with you and always keep them in a safe place where they cannot be easily pick pocketed.
  • The currency in England is the pound. Money can easily be exchanged at many banks and exchange stations throughout the country. A way to make sure that you are getting an accurate exchange rate is to use an ATM.
  • Be prepared to spend more than you might like in England. The exchange rate is almost 2:1 and things are typically very expensive. Be prepared with enough money so that you will be able to enjoy your trip without worrying.
