Westminster Abbey is one of the most historic and beautiful buildings in England. Westminster Abbey is well over a thousand years old and was the site of the famous coronation of Williams the Conqueror in 1066. With the exception of two monarchs, every King or Queen of England was crowned in a coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey. The Westminster Abbey that stands today was built from the 13th to the 16th centuries and was designed to be a church for the Royals and the national site for the coronation and burial of monarchs.

Westminster Abbey is divided into several sections, so make sure that you allow yourself ample time to visit all parts of the structure. Because Westminster Abbey is one of the most popular tourist destinations in England, be prepared to stand in long lines, especially if you are visiting in the summer months. Westminster Abbey is open on most weekdays from approximately 9:00 in the morning until 5:00 at night. The Abbey may be periodically closed for maintenance or special occasions. Be prepared to pay an admission fee to enter the Abbey and also be aware that you are not allowed to take pictures while inside the Abbey and they may restrict people from entering if they are not appropriately dressed.
